The Ashley Wood Golf Club Course

Brief Details

 :

18 Hole Par 70, Downland With Magnificent Views, Blandford, 2 Fore 1 Described by Peter Alliss as “The best kept secret in Dorset”, the course is one of the oldest in the country. Constructed on downland, the fairways are undulating and although hole 3 does have a short sharp hill, all others are easy walking. Four holes are played within Ashley Woods, ancient woodland carpeted with bluebells in May. Being natural chalk downland, the course drains very quickly and remains playable in all but the most extreme weather. The course is rarely closed for long, and trolleys have only been banned for four days during the last ten years. The par 70 course is 6270 yards long with some ‘open’ drives and some requiring more accuracy. It is a good test of golf for all levels of ability. Ashley Wood Golf Club was built by Sir William Henry Smith-Marriott in 1896 after becoming bored with the usual leisure activities of the day. Ashley Wood was the fifth Golf Club to be formed in Dorset, following Bridport 1891, Isle of Purbeck 1892, Lyme Regis 1893 and Sherborne 1894. The course was 2642 yards in length consisting of nine holes complete with grass bunkers. The course was laid out over historic countryside, including Buzbury Rings, an ancient ring fort, tumuli and defensive dykes all of which dated back to pre-Roman times. These ancient remains were incorporated into the layout in various ways and without doubt added to the difficulty of the course. An entry in The Golfers Annual XXII reads as follows: Blandford – Ashley Wood Golf Club. Instituted April 1896 Annual subscription £1.1s Ladies 12s 6d Number of members 40 Hon Sec – Rev F Salmon, Langton Rectory, Blandford The course, of nine holes, is at Ashley Wood, about two miles from Blandford Station. Visitors 1s. per day, 3s. per week, or 7s. 6d per month. There are three hotels. In 1952, the course, having become slightly derelict during the Second World War, was purchased by Roy & Jackie Carey. In 1960 the Careys made a course of 9 holes, with two tees on each hole, giving as total yardage of 5107 yards. On the 7th May 1994 and almost 100 years from its inception The Ashley Wood Golf Club, having been extended, was now opened as an 18 hole course with a yardage of 6276 yards. Since 1996 construction has been made to enhance the course with new tees and fairway constructions. The course also has a new watering system which gives an excellent standard of green during the summer months. The Ashley Wood Golf Club has a long and interesting history. For those interested in finding out more, the book ‘The Ashley Wood Story’ by Alan Lindsay makes for an interesting read about one of the oldest courses in the County.

20.

Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum

Brief Details

 :

The Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum tells the harrowing tale of the Martyrs arrest, trial and punishment, leading to the foundation of modern day trade unionism. The museum has been re-designed into a modern, informative, and educational exhibition, using interactive touch screen displays new graphic panels telling the story in text and images. The museum sets out the Martyrs' story in four sections: Before the arrest, The Oath and Betrayal, Transportation, and the Homecoming. A new Book and CD-ROM have also been produced, all sponsored by trades unions and organisations. The museum evolved out of the library which formed part of the Tolpuddle Martyrs Memorial Cottages, built in 1934 to mark the Centenary of the Martyrs' conviction. The library, meant for use by the workers living in the cottages, soon became a depository for various artefacts, documents and memorabilia relating to the history of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Over the years, a rather ad hoc display telling the story of the Martyrs had evolved into the Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum. The new Museum opened Saturday 1st April 2000, it has finally become an appropriate place of pilgrimage for visitors from the UK and around the world, for young and old alike. Visitors can now discover for themselves how the Tolpuddle Martyrs changed the face of social history and, through their beliefs and actions, made such an impact on trade unionism today. Sponsors include the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union, General Municipal Boilermakers, National Association of Schoolmasters/Union of Women teachers, National Union of Teachers, Trades Union Congress, Transport and General Workers Union, The Public Services Union, Independent Union of Halifax Staff, Society of Telecom Executives, British Airways, Cooperative Wholesale Society, Guest Keene and Nettlefold and the National Grid Trade Union Fund Managers
